Takeshi Kawakami

I have broad interests in the fields of genetics of speciation and adaptation but am particularly interested in how variation in recombination rate impacts process of speciation and adaptation.

I have been using both animals and plants to explore my research interests.

For more specific information about my research interests, please see Research Project and Publications.

PhD Student

Homa Popoli

Homa is supervised by Prof. Hans Ellegren (Uppsala University) and myself and is focussing on evolution of sex chromosomes in birds. Unlike mammals, male birds have two copies of Z chromosome while female birds have one each copy of Z chromosome and W chromosome. Importantly, there is a huge variation in size and the degree of sex chromosome differentiation among birds. Her project focuses on molecular evolution of sex chromosomes in relation to the patterns of recombination by using various bird species.
